So you want a web copywriter?

Today, everybody's online. But do they all know what they're doing there?

For so many web marketers, the penny has not really dropped. The one that says online copy is king. In other words, that it's about words.

Look at it this way. You've no presenter or salesperson on your web site. So how on earth can it communicate your messages? Through the words. The copy is the only contact with your visitors. Mess up and it's the only contact you ever will have.

To my mind, one phrase says it all - ‘Where the rubber meets the road.' Just as the tyres are the only point of contact your car has with the tarmac, so your web site copy is your only means of communicating with your customers. Even the most expensive Bentley is useless with the wrong tyres, and so is the most superbly programmed website without the right messages. They're that important.

Get it right and you've a superbly cost-effective lead generator and communications tool. Get it wrong and people will just click away - wasting your sizeable investment in programming, design and hosting in the process.

Yet, that said, writing effective web copy is not that easy ...

SEO. No job for DIY

Mustard and hot dogs. Marks and Spencer. Web copy and keywords.

Put simply, you wouldn't want one without the other.

Keywords are an essential element of SEO - Search Engine Optimisation.

Not only do you have to write copy for a human audience. You have to cater for spiders too. Not those from Mars, thanks all the same David. Rather, the ones that Google and other search engines use to trawl the net in response to any enquiry.

And you don't need me to tell you that if you don't impress Google's spiders you may as well spend your online budget on .................

Your visitors in the virtual world will be just that. Virtual.

Together with links, and a few other measures, keywords are critical. Yet SEO is a moving target. Do you have the time and energy to keep up with it?
